Topic: Freedom

Summary

One has Freedom when no other person is using Coercion against them.

Searching For The Word "Freedom"

Growing up, it took me a while to figure out that a concept I originally (wrongly) called by different names, was actually called: freedom.

I went from (wrongly) caling this concept: Rights, then Civil Rights, and then Inalienable Rights... before I finally figured out it was called freedom.

I started off calling the concept: Rights. However, that was wrong. (Rights include things such as Entitlements, which in practice take away freedom of others. And one person having freedom does not take away the freedom of any other person.)

I then started calling the concept: Civil Rights. Which was also wrong. (Like all rights, civil rights are granted to you and can be taken away at any time. Freedom cannot be ungranted, but can only be violated.)

I then started calling the concept: Inalienable Rights. But that was wrong too. (Inalienable rights, like all rights are granted to you. I.e., someone gives you permission to do or not do something. And you don't need permission to have freedom. Freedom is something you either have, something that someone else has taken away from you.)

I later finally found the word freedom.

Corruption Of The Word "Freedom"

In the English Language, due to what I believe are various political agendas and historical accidents, the word freedom has begun to be corrupted.

The word freedom has been confused with the concepts of Rights and Entitlements.

Corruption of the Word "Freedom" Due To The USA's Bill of Rights

Part of the confusion comes from the USA's Bill of Rights -- from the USA's 1st to 10th amendments (inclusive) to their constitution.

In amendments #1 to #10 (inclusive), there is talk of various instances of freedom: freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, etc. Over time, in practice, people in the USA no longer have freedom to do any of these things.

They now can sometimes get a right to certain kind of speech. However, due to Censorship laws in the USA, one may not use any kind of speech that violates any of the following USA Censorship laws: Ant-Defamation Laws, Trade Secret Laws, Copyright Laws, Trademark Laws, Patent Laws, Anti-Pornography Laws and others.

They now can apply for a special license to be a member of the press, and if they a granted this license, they may practice a limited right to press, unless that right is revoked.

This transformation of these named freedoms, in the USA's Bill of Rights, into rights that are sometimes granted to some people, and that can be revoked, has contributed to the corruption of the word freedom in the minds of many.

Corruption of the Word "Freedom" Due To Socialism

Socialism, as seen Marxist literature, redefines the word Freedom by essentially (falsely) stating that freedom was not the absense of Coercion, but for a person to have their freedom, that they need the material means to accomplish their goals.

This (false) redefinition of the word Freedom uses the word more as a Metaphor, than the literal meaning of the word. And is incompatible with the original meaning, since for a person to always have the material means to accomplish their goals, they must, in general, take materials by Coercion, from others. And in doing so, they must violate the freedom of others.

Corruption of the Word "Freedom" Due To Isaiah Berlin Style Redefinition

Like the Nazi redefinition of the word Christianity into Positive Christianity and Negative Christianity, so too do many people, who think in line with Isaiah Berlin redefine the word Freedom into Positive Freedom and Negative Freedom.

With the Nazi redefinition of the concept of Christianity, the original meaning of the concept of Christianity was renamed Negative Christianity, thus pushing the connotation that it is bad and should be rejected and forgotten. And the new (false) redefinition of Christianity as Positive Christianity, which should eventually completely replace the original definition of the word Christianity.

So to do those who think like Isaiah Berlin redefinition of the word Freedom, rename the original meaning of the concept of Freedom as Negative Freedom, thus thus pushing the connotation that it is bad and should be rejected and forgotten. And the new (false) redefinition of Freedom as Positive Freedom, which should eventually completely replace the original definition of the word Freedom.

The (false) redefinition of the concept of Freedom as Positive Freedom, goes completely against the original and real concept of Freedom, in that it takes away the freedom of people, so others can be granted Entitlements.

From what I can tell, this redefinition of the word Freedom is towards a political agenda. Mainly due to the usage of the word Freedom in legal documents. In redefining the word Freedom, the change the any law which uses the word "Freedom". Also, in changing the meaning of the "Freedom", it makes it difficult to be critical of the Entitlements that are being put into law. And make it difficult to promote and discuss the idea of Freedom in general.
