BitTorrent is a popular P2P swarming technology originally created by Bram Cohen, but also (unofficially) extended by many others.

One of the reasons I believe BitTorrent has become so popular, over other P2P technologies, is that it shunts itself via the web. This allows people to have URL's to -- to have links to -- BitTorrent downloads. So, one can put links to BitTorrent downloads in a webpage; one can put links to BitTorrent downloads in an e-mail; and one can send links to BitTorrent downloads in a instant message; etc.
